A Platform for Global Oneness

Conceived as the first initiative of its kind in India, Jahan-e-Khusrau represents an innovative national endeavour shaped by a distinctly global vision. It redefined stagecraft by situating performances within an ancient ruin, invoking a realm of timelessness where history, memory, and living art converge.

The Genesis of a Global Enigma

Jahan-e-Khusrau traces its roots to “Tajjalli” (2000) - an Indo-Iranian concert featuring artistes from Iran, Kashmir, and Awadh. This encounter evolved into the film Rumi in the Land of Khusrau by Muzaffar Ali, and in 2001 crystallised as Jahan-e-Khusrau.

Staged as a three-day seamless concert in the ruins of Arab-ki-Sarai at the Humayun Tomb Monuments in New Delhi, it became the first global Sufi music festival in India held in a historical ruin. The deliberate dialogue between era and content gave the festival its singular character. The setting was not merely a backdrop, but an active participant dissolving boundaries between past and present.

The inaugural edition featured legendary artistes including Abida Parveen (Pakistan) and Lotfi Bouchnak (Tunisia), establishing a syncretic dynamic synergy that was organic and spiritual in intent.

Creative Mentorship & Nurturing Talent

Beyond a performance space, Jahan-e-Khusrau functions as a discovery platform and training ground for the next generation of artistes. Offering creative mentorship across vocal, instrumental, and performing arts, each edition introduces new poetry to the stage, ensuring accessibility across languages and cultures.

Over the last few decades, the festival has been an instrumental launchpad. Artistes like Manjari Chaturvedi, Sonam Kalra, Deveshi Sahgal, Murad Ali Khan, Astha Dixit, Shivani Varma, Smita Bellur, Zia Nath, Pooja Gaitonde, Jasleen Monga, and the Roohani Sisters were introduced on the Jahan-e-Khusrau stage and have since reached great heights in their careers.

Origins & Evolution

The core objective for which the Rumi Foundation is formed is to establish, promote, and support education systems and cultural institutions that foster global oneness through creative art forms.  To achieve this, our work is focused on the following key areas:

  • Arts, Film & Media: We undertake, produce, and support a wide array of creative works, including documentaries, feature films, and television serials. A central aim is the establishment of a Rumi Film Festival and a Film and Communications Arts Institute to further these goals.

  • Interfaith Understanding: A key objective is to present and promote the human face of Islam to build bridges of understanding. We create and distribute publications on interfaith icons from all religions and highlight existing examples of unity in multi-ethnic and multi-faith communities.

  • Education & Self-Reliance: We work to modernize Madarsa education with a dual focus on a modern viewpoint of the Quran and a Quranic vision of modern knowledge. We also support grassroots education in rural India to create self-reliance and counter fundamentalist education.

  • Traditional Arts & Crafts: We are dedicated to the promotion and development of traditional Indian handicrafts and handlooms. We provide training, design, marketing, and tools to artisans, taking inspiration from traditional Sufi art to preserve the composite culture of India.
